Columbus

Bar of Modern Art.  (BOMA).  583 East Broad Street, Columbus, Ohio, 43215.  Telephone:  614-233-3000.  The dance floor is one of the larger ones in Columbus; unfortunately, no ballroom or salsa is now being offered at BOMA.  Check out the Bar of Modern Art's website at http://barofmodernart.com/

OSU Tango Club.  On Saturdays, the OSU Tango Club offers lessons in Argentine Tango from 7-8 p.m. and from 8-9 p.m.  A practice session takes place from 9-9:30 p.m. and a milonga thereafter.  Currently
lessons and the milongas are held at Pomerene 213.  Check out their website at http://tango.osu.edu

Dance Plus.  1255 Grandview Avenue, Columbus, Ohio, 43212.  614-486-0471.  This ballroom dance studio in the trendy Grandview section of Columbus offers a ballroom dancing "practice session" every Friday night from 9-10:30 p.m.  The practice session is $7 and is open to both students of the studio and to non-students as well.  The studio also offers private and group lessons throughout the week.  The dance floor is big, well decorated, and the studio is in the process of adding an expresso and tea bar which will not diminish the size of the dance floor.  Check out their website at http://www.dance-plus.com/

94th Aerosquadron Restaurant, 5030 Sawyer Road, Columbus, Ohio, 43219.  Telephone: 614-237-8887.  Every Thursday the 17 piece Rick Brunetto Big Band plays at the 94th Aerosquadron Restaurant in Columbus.  (The band has played there for 18 years running.)  Dancing on Thursday nights starts at 8 p.m., but there is no lesson prior to dancing.  On Fridays, a DJ plays a variety of music; dancing on Fridays lasts from 8 p.m. to midnight.  Admission is $4/non-dinner guests or free for dinner guests.  This restaurant is located extremely close to the Columbus International Airport and you can often see planes landing and taking off.  While the size of the dance floor is very modest and the decor of the restaurant is a bit tired and outdated, the band on Thursdays is excellent and the atmosphere is welcoming.  This dance area features an older crowd, but occasionally folks from the Ohio State University Swing Club will swing by and liven things up a bit.  Check out the restaurant's website at http://www.94thaero.com/

Columbus Argentine Tango Society (CATS).  CATS hosts milongas as well as workshops to help you fine tune your skills in the Argentine Tango.  This website gives detailed information about the origins and structure of the Argentine Tango as well as information about tango opportunities in Columbus Ohio.  http://www.tangocats.com/

South Dakota

Mitchell

Corn Palace Polka Festival.  If you're visiting eastern South Dakota and you enjoy dancing the Polka, I recommend stopping by the annual Polka festival at the Corn Palace in Mitchell, South Dakota.  Visit the website of the event at http://www.cornpalacefestival.com/polkafestival.html

Virginia

Christiansburg

The Sapphire Ballroom offers dances on a semi-regular basis in downtown Christiansburg at 30 West Main Street.  Check out its website at http://www.sapphiredance.com.  Also check out http://www.dancingduo.net for cross referencing.

Wytheville

The Mountain Empire USA Dance Chapter frequently holds ballroom dances in Wytheville, Virginia.  Click here for the chapter's website or visit the URL at: http://hawkshadow.org/index650.html

Washington D.C.

Habana Village (often spelled as "Havana Village.")  1834 Columbia Road NW.  Washington D.C. 202-462-6310.  The floor is a bit crowded and not especially wide, but this multi-story Adams Morgan area restaurant features salsa instruction and great salsa dancing.  You can find tasty Cuban food here, too.  http://www.habanavillage.com

ARGENTINA

Buenos Aires

The CITA Tango Festival in Buenos Aires.  This festival offers a week long series of workshop instruction in the Argentine Tango.  I went for a series of workshops in 2002.  http://www.cosmostango.com

As Buenos Aires is the capital and birthplace of tango, you can find multiple milongas in the city.  There are also other tango festivals besides the CITA Tango Festival that you might consider attending.  If you go to Buenos Aires, pick up a copy of the Buenos Aires Herald at a sidewalk newsstand in Buenos Aires.  The Herald gives locations and times of various milongas held around the Buenos Aires area.  (As used here, milonga means "Argentine Tango dance.")  One of the milongas I went to while there was located at Nino Bien.

Cruising and Dancing

Dancers at Sea.  Dancers at Sea is run by Wendy Olson and is provides a great way to combine your love of travel with your love of ballroom dancing.  Lessons from professional instructors are provided as you travel from one exotic port of call to another.  I have taken two cruises with this program:  one in 2005 and the second in 2007.  www.dancersatsea.com
